The myth that “Etsy is closed to Türkiye” still circulates, but the fact is simple: Etsy Payments has covered Türkiye since 2020, and new shops can be opened from Türkiye. Thousands of Turkish sellers of handmade goods, vintage items and digital files are active on Etsy today. This guide covers opening a shop, getting paid via Payoneer, Etsy's five-part fee structure and turning your sales into official exports with micro-export (ETGB) for tax advantages.
Up front: fee rates are taken from Etsy's published schedule and can change; the tax section is general information — consult your accountant for your own situation.
Opening an Etsy shop from Türkiye
Opening a shop is free; you pay the $0.20 listing fee when you list your first item. For a seller in Türkiye the critical part is getting paid: Etsy collects money through Etsy Payments and pays sellers in Türkiye in USD into a Payoneer account (a TRY bank account is also supported; PayPal is not available in Türkiye, so it is not an option). Most sellers pick the Payoneer-USD route to keep currency conversion under their own control.
- Create an Etsy account, prepare your shop name and first listing (the shop goes live with the first item).
- In the Etsy Payments setup pick Türkiye as your country and connect Payoneer as the payment account.
- Complete identity verification — Etsy is strict about seller verification, so have documents ready.
Etsy's fee structure: not one commission but five parts
- Listing fee — $0.20: per listing, valid 4 months; renewed automatically when the item sells (so every sale brings its own $0.20 too).
- Transaction fee — 6.5%: on item price + buyer-paid shipping combined. Baking shipping into the price as “free shipping” does not reduce this fee.
- Payment processing: a country-specific rate + fixed fee (e.g. 3% + $0.25 in the US). Verify the Türkiye tariff on your own payment statement — the published table is not explicit about it.
- Offsite Ads — 15% (or 12%): Etsy advertises your listings off-site on its own; if an order comes from such an ad, 15% is charged. Shops with $10,000+ sales in the past 365 days pay 12% but can no longer opt out. The fee is only known after the order arrives.
- Currency conversion — 2.5%: when your listing currency differs from your payout currency.
In total, 20-30% of a typical sale can stay on Etsy's side. In our own measurement, a $14.99 non-ad sale shipped from Türkiye left the seller about $12.50 — an effective ~18.5% deduction, plus another 15% if the order is ad-attributed. Run your own numbers with the Etsy fee calculator — country-selectable (US/Romania/Türkiye) with an Offsite Ads switch.
Rule of thumb: price so that an order stays profitable even if it comes through Offsite Ads. The fee is charged after the order, so pricing is your only defence.
Micro-export: VAT-free sales with ETGB
When shipping an Etsy order abroad from Türkiye there are two routes: sending it like a “gift/sample” (off the books — we don't recommend it) or micro-export. In micro-export, the authorised courier files the ETGB (electronic customs declaration) on your behalf; no customs broker needed. The invoice is issued without VAT, and the ETGB is the document proving the sale is an official export. Details in our micro-export guide.
Two tax advantages stand out: (1) export sales are VAT-exempt, and input VAT you paid domestically can enter the refund process; (2) e-export sellers who meet the conditions can benefit from an income tax reduction of up to 50% on micro-export earnings. Both depend on documentation and conditions (proper ETGB records, bank-documented collection, etc.) — set this up with your accountant before relying on it.
The three most common mistakes
- Treating the fees as one commission: a seller pricing off the 6.5% alone discovers after the sale that processing + listing + Offsite Ads ate the margin.
- Forgetting currency and conversion: listing in USD and collecting in TRY costs 2.5% conversion; taking Payoneer-USD keeps conversion under your control but Payoneer's own fees still apply.
- Tracking profit without costs: without product cost, packaging and shipping labels entered, what you see is revenue, not profit. Verimle's Etsy integration computes order-level profit with the fee stack deducted — and because Etsy has no final settlement records, the figure is honestly labeled “estimated” in the panel.
FAQ
Is there a buybox on Etsy? No. There is no shared-listing model where multiple sellers compete on one page, so the buybox concept doesn't exist; visibility is decided by Etsy search. That's why Trendyol-style buybox tracking/repricing is not meaningful on Etsy.
Can I sell without a company? Tax obligations and exemption conditions vary by situation; see our guide on selling without a company and consult your accountant.
Which categories sell? Handmade goods, personalised gifts, digital files (instant delivery, zero shipping cost) and vintage (20+ years old) are Etsy's core categories. Türkiye is especially strong in textiles, jewellery and ceramics.
