Selling on eMAG: How Commission, VAT and the Buy Button Work (2026)

On eMAG you enter prices EXCLUDING VAT — the opposite of Trendyol. Here is which amount commission is charged on, how buy-button rank is decided, and how the mandatory price band works, with worked examples.

Most of Romania's marketplace volume sits on eMAG. Sellers arriving from other marketplaces keep making the same expensive mistake: assuming prices work the same way here. They do not — and that single difference breaks your floor-price maths from the start.

1. eMAG prices EXCLUDE VAT

On Trendyol the price you type is the VAT-inclusive consumer price: type 121 and the customer pays 121, part of which is tax you never keep. On eMAG the price you type is already your net price. The Marketplace API documentation defines the field literally as “sale price without VAT”. VAT is added at checkout and never reaches you.

Concretely: enter 100 RON and the customer pays 121 RON at 21% VAT. Enter 121 RON out of habit and you have just listed the product at a 121 RON net price — the customer pays 146 RON, a price point you never intended.

The reverse error is sneakier. If you compute your floor with a Trendyol-style formula and strip embedded VAT out of the price, you are deducting a tax the price never contained. Your floor comes out too high, you decide you “can't go below it”, and you price yourself out of the competition without noticing.

2. Which amount is commission charged on?

Commission is calculated on the VAT-exclusive sale price — the number you typed.

What you keep = ex-VAT price − (ex-VAT price × commission rate)

LineAmount
Your price (excluding VAT)100.00 RON
Commission (15%)−15.00 RON
Your net revenue85.00 RON
VAT added on top (21%)21.00 RON (the state's)
Customer pays121.00 RON

There is no single “eMAG commission” figure: the rate varies by category and can drop on campaign sales. Verify your own category's rate in the seller panel — a rough average will mislead you. To try the numbers on your own product, use the eMAG commission calculator.

3. The buy button: you see your rank, not the second price

On eMAG several sellers can offer the same product and the “Add to cart” button goes to one of them. The API tells you three things: your rank, the winning price and how many sellers are competing.

What it does not tell you is the second-place price — a gap that looks minor and quietly eats your margin. Because once you win the button, the question “how far can I raise my price?” is answered precisely by that second price. Without it you are left with two bad options: sit forever at the low price that won, or raise blindly and lose the button.

The right answer is to measure the ceiling: remember the highest price at which you were still winning and the lowest at which you were losing, then narrow the gap. Those two numbers bracket the ceiling from both sides and converge on the real limit within a few rounds. That is exactly how Verimle's eMAG pricing engine works — and it never goes below your floor price.

4. Do not ignore the mandatory price band

Every eMAG offer has a minimum and a maximum sale price. A price outside that band is not saved — the marketplace rejects the request. A price that is perfectly correct on paper is worthless if it falls outside the band.

The common real-world case: your cost went up, your floor price rose, but the offer's upper limit is still at its old value. Writing a profitable price for that product is now technically impossible. The fix is not to force the price — it is to update the band in the panel.

5. One integration, four markets

eMAG runs the same seller API in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland. The contract is identical; only the base address and the currency change (RON, BGN, HUF, PLN). If you already sell in one, opening the next is a pricing and logistics decision rather than a technical project.

Summary

  • Prices are entered excluding VAT; VAT is added on top and is not yours.
  • Commission is charged on the ex-VAT price; the rate varies by category.
  • You see your buy-button rank and the winning price — not the second price.
  • A price outside the mandatory band is not saved.
  • The same API covers four countries.

To get the profit maths right separately for each marketplace, the eMAG commission calculator and the break-even calculator are a good start.
