eMAG or Trendyol in Romania? The Seller Economics of Both Channels (2026)

In Romania the real difference between eMAG and Trendyol is not the commission rate but the price plane: on eMAG the price you type excludes VAT, on Trendyol it includes VAT. Floor price, the nature of the profit data, Buy Button vs Buybox, and running both channels — with worked arithmetic.

In Romania the real difference between eMAG and Trendyol is not the commission rate but the price plane. On eMAG the number you type into the panel excludes VAT; on Trendyol the number you type is the VAT-inclusive price the customer pays. That one-sentence difference means the floor price, the profit calculation and the pricing decisions cannot use the same formula on both channels. This article compares the two channels by mechanism, not by rate table: which amount is deducted from, where the profit figure comes from, how competition works, and what changes when you run both.

1. What is the biggest structural difference between eMAG and Trendyol?

The price plane. eMAG's price field is defined literally as “sale price without VAT” in the official API documentation: the number you type is your net price, VAT is added on top, collected from the customer, and never reaches you. Commission is charged on that VAT-exclusive amount — we covered the full mechanism in the eMAG commission guide.

On Trendyol the plane is reversed: the price you type is the shelf price the customer pays, including VAT, and commission is computed on that VAT-inclusive amount — detailed in Trendyol commission rates. So the word “price” does not point at the same thing on the two channels: on one it is the amount before tax, on the other the amount after tax.

In Romania the standard VAT rate is 21% and the reduced rate for books is 11%; the examples below use 21%. We give no single commission figure: the rate varies by category on both channels — read your own from your commission invoice and your seller panel. In the examples we hold the same example rate (15%) constant on both channels, because what we are comparing is not the rate but the base.

2. What happens if you type the same number into both panels?

You get two different shelf prices and two different net revenues. The clearest way to see it: type 100 RON into both panels and follow the result.

LineeMAG (you typed 100)Trendyol (you typed 100)
Price the customer sees121.00 RON100.00 RON
Ex-VAT price100.00 RON82.64 RON
Commission (example 15%)−15.00 RON−15.00 RON
What you keep (ex-VAT)85.00 RON70.25 RON

That is 14.75 RON per unit, roughly 17%. But the table does not say “Trendyol is more expensive”. Had you typed 121 on Trendyol — equalising the shelf price — the same example rate would have left you 85.00 RON ex-VAT there too, exactly as on eMAG. The difference is not channel generosity; it is which plane the number sits on.

The practical consequence: carrying a working price list from one channel to the other shifts your prices by about 17% without you noticing. The day you copy your catalogue across, your profit table breaks and you start hunting for the cause in commissions — while the cause is the meaning of the number you typed.

3. Why can the floor-price formula not be the same on both channels?

Because the floor is a price too, and it also sits on a plane. The two formulas:

  • eMAG (ex-VAT): floor = (cost + shipping + target margin) ÷ (1 − commission rate)
  • Trendyol (VAT-inclusive): floor = (cost + shipping + target margin) ÷ (1 − commission rate − v ÷ (1 + v))

Same product on both: cost 60 RON, shipping 15 RON, target margin 10 RON, example commission rate 15%, VAT 21%. The eMAG formula gives a floor of 85 ÷ 0.85 = 100.00 RON ex-VAT, which appears on the listing as 121.00 RON. The Trendyol formula gives 85 ÷ 0.6764 = 125.66 RON including VAT, and that number already is the shelf price.

Putting those two numbers side by side and concluding “so I have to sell higher on Trendyol” is a misreading: one is a VAT-exclusive price, the other a VAT-inclusive one. The real failure happens when you mix them up, and it runs in both directions:

  1. Trendyol's floor typed into eMAG. 125.66 RON enters eMAG's ex-VAT field and the shelf price becomes 152.05 RON. You conclude you “can't go below that price” and quietly price yourself out of the competition.
  2. eMAG's floor typed into Trendyol. 100.00 RON enters as a VAT-inclusive price while your real floor is 125.66 — you sell 25.66 RON per unit below it. And because your repricing engine defends that wrong floor, the error repeats on every order.

To run the numbers on your own product, the eMAG commission calculator takes country, VAT rate and commission rate as your inputs.

4. Is the profit figure the same kind of number on both channels?

No — and the source of that difference is not your bookkeeping habits but the shape of the data each channel returns. Trendyol's settlement records carry the order number and the barcode: what was deducted from which order is visible line by line, so profit is read from the real payout. We put that next to the eMAG side in the eMAG net profit article.

On eMAG the invoice endpoint returns genuine invoice data — amount without VAT, VAT amount, total with VAT, and commission flagged as its own category — but what comes back is a document total: there is no order or SKU breakdown. So on eMAG, per-product profit is not read off the invoice, it is computed from your order data and shown in the panel with an “estimated” label.

For the seller this produces two different working rhythms:

  • Order-level auditing on Trendyol. An unexpected deduction can be traced down to a single order; unfair-deduction detection and a dispute draft are possible thanks to that breakdown. (A draft does not recover the money — it detects the issue and prepares your case.)
  • Period-level reconciliation on eMAG. Once a month, divide the ex-VAT total of your commission invoice by your ex-VAT sales revenue for the same period: the result is your effective commission rate. If it diverges from what you expected, either your category mix is blended or a line did not behave the way you expected.

Both work perfectly well; the audit point simply sits somewhere else. On eMAG you watch the period's rate instead of chasing one order.

5. How does competition work: Buybox or Buy Button?

Both do the same job: among several sellers offering the same product, one offer wins and the add-to-cart button is attached to it. Trendyol calls it the Buybox, eMAG the Buy Button. The most important shared property is this: price is not the only factor. Seller performance, delivery speed, stock availability and cancellation behaviour all count — which is why being the cheapest guarantees neither winning the button nor keeping it.

The pricing rule that follows is simple: while chasing the button, never go below your floor. And because the floor sits on a different plane on each channel, the same product has two separate floors. Verimle measures your rank, the winning price and the number of offers on both channels and writes them into the panel; the alert that fires the moment you lose the button is built for Trendyol and Amazon, while on eMAG you follow the button state in the panel.

6. What does running both channels in Romania require?

One stock pool, two pricing logics and two operational calendars. Selling the same product on two storefronts does not mean writing the same price into both:

  1. Two floors, two prices. Because of the plane difference above, the same product's floor is expressed with different numbers on the two channels. You manage the prices separately too: your commission rate, shipping cost and return rate all vary by channel.
  2. One stock pool, two doors. Both storefronts are fed from the same shelf; if the sync lags, you sell the same unit twice. Cross-channel stock sync is therefore the first technical requirement of multi-channel selling.
  3. Separate content and matching. Title, image and category rules differ per channel, and how your product is matched to the right catalogue entry (barcode/EAN) decides which pool of offers you compete in.
  4. Campaign calendars do not line up. The two channels have separate campaign periods and discount rules; a discount you grant on one does not protect your margin on the other.

Do not skip the sequencing either: the second channel opens after the first one is running smoothly. We framed that decision in the multi-marketplace strategy article.

7. Which one, in which situation?

The right answer depends on your category and your operation, so here is the case for each side without taking one.

The case for eMAG first

Romanian buyers have largely built their search habit on eMAG; the depth of the local catalogue and the established logistics options are there. If your product is native to the local market, if you can run returns and customer communication in Romanian, and if you have sorted out invoicing locally, eMAG is the natural first stop. The price plane also simplifies in your favour: the floor calculation carries no VAT term.

The case for Trendyol first

If you already sell on Trendyol, the panel, the credentials and the operational habits are in place; you open the Romanian storefront with the same catalogue and the same warehouse, with no new system to learn. In some categories the pool of competing offers is thinner. And on the finance side, order-level settlement data puts your profit audit at order granularity from day one.

And for most sellers: both, in sequence

The two channels are not mutually exclusive. Frame the decision not as “which one is better” but as “which one do I get running first”, and open the second while the first is operating steadily. If you want to see which way the numbers point, all you have to do is write down your own category's commission rate, shipping cost and return rate separately for each channel — the comparison ends in that table.

8. Three frequently asked questions

Do you enter prices the same way on eMAG and Trendyol?

No. eMAG's price field is defined without VAT; VAT is added on top, collected from the customer and never reaches you. On Trendyol the number you type is the VAT-inclusive price the customer pays. Type the same number into both panels and you get two different shelf prices and two different net revenues.

Will the floor price be the same on both channels?

It will not. On eMAG the floor is a VAT-exclusive price and the formula has no VAT term; on Trendyol the floor is a VAT-inclusive price and the formula carries one. Typing one into the other channel's price field either inflates your floor or drops you below it.

Why is profit labelled “estimated” on eMAG?

eMAG's commission invoice returns a document total with no order or SKU breakdown, so per-product profit is computed from your order data and labelled “estimated” in the panel. On Trendyol the settlement record carries the order and the barcode, so profit is read from the real payout.

9. Where does Verimle sit in this picture?

Verimle supports both channels and computes each on its own plane. On the eMAG side the floor price is built on the VAT-exclusive plane; on Trendyol, on the VAT-inclusive one. On Trendyol Global storefronts the catalogue list price and the amount actually collected may differ — the floor is built on the amount actually collected, because that is the figure that determines your margin.

On profit the distinction is clean: on Trendyol, profit comes from the real settlement records with order and barcode breakdown. On eMAG, profit is computed from your order data and carries an “estimated” label in the panel — for the document-total reason above. On the Buy Button and Buybox side we measure your rank, the winning price and the number of offers on both channels and write them into the panel; the alert that fires the moment you lose it is built for Trendyol and Amazon. Unfair-deduction disputes are Trendyol-specific; the eMAG API has no endpoint for filing one, invoices are read-only.
