How is VAT calculated?

Value Added Tax works in two directions, and most of the confusion comes from not separating them. If you have a VAT-excluded amount (the base) you add tax on top of it; if you have a VAT-included sale price you separate the tax out of it. The formulas are:

  • Excluded to included: VAT-included amount = base × (1 + rate). VAT = base × rate. Example: 1.000 TL base, 20% → 200 TL VAT, 1.200 TL included.
  • Included to excluded: base = VAT-included amount / (1 + rate). VAT = included − base. Example: 1.200 TL included, 20% → 1.000 TL base, 200 TL VAT.

The most common mistake is taking the rate directly off the VAT-included price: 20% of 1.200 TL is not 240 TL — the VAT inside it is 200 TL. That is because the 20% tax is added to the base, not to the included amount. This is why the division method is mandatory.

VAT in e-commerce: calculated, deductible, payable

The VAT you pay to the tax office in a period is not the entire VAT on the product you sold. It works through offsetting:

  • Calculated VAT: the total of the VAT you collected from customers on your sales.
  • Deductible VAT: the total of the VAT you paid when buying the product, packaging, shipping and the marketplace commission.
  • VAT payable = calculated − deductible. If the result is positive you pay it to the tax office; if negative it is carried over to the next period as carryover VAT.

So for most sellers VAT is not a cost but a pass-through item that you collect and remit. The cost impact mainly shows up on reduced-rate sales and in cash flow: when you sell at 1% or 10% while buying your inputs with 20% VAT, the burden that builds up on you can be subject to a VAT refund for the portion exceeding the annual limit (164.000 TL for 2026).

VAT and commission on marketplace sales

On Trendyol the commission is calculated on the product's VAT-included sale price and the commission invoice is issued VAT-included; no additional VAT is added on top of the deduction. So on a product with a 15% commission sold for 1.200 TL VAT-included, the deduction is 1.200 × 15% = 180 TL; on the invoice this amount is broken down as 150 TL base + 30 TL VAT. This 30 TL is deductible VAT for you and is subtracted from your calculated VAT on the tax return.

To see the real per-unit profit you need to evaluate VAT not on its own but together with the commission, shipping, service fee and withholding tax. For a calculation that breaks down every deduction per sale you can use the Trendyol profit calculator; for pricing, you can work out the relationship between sale price and cost with the margin calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you extract the VAT from a VAT-included price?

You divide the VAT-included amount by (1 + rate). Divide by 1,20 for 20%, by 1,10 for 10%, and by 1,01 for 1%. For example, on a 1.200 TL price that includes 20% VAT the base is 1.200 / 1,20 = 1.000 TL and the VAT is 200 TL. Taking 20% directly off the included amount (240 TL) is wrong.

What are the 2026 VAT rates?

Three rates are in force in 2026: the standard rate of 20% (all goods and services with no rate specified), the reduced rate of 10% (textiles, ready-to-wear, health, education, accommodation and similar) and 1% (basic foodstuffs such as bread, flour, milk, eggs and meat). Beyond these, exempt transactions such as exports are rated at 0%.

How do you add VAT to a VAT-excluded price?

You multiply the base by (1 + rate). To add 20% VAT to a 1.000 TL base: 1.000 × 1,20 = 1.200 TL. The VAT amount is base × rate = 1.000 × 0,20 = 200 TL.

How do you claim a VAT refund in e-commerce?

If your deductible VAT (the VAT on your purchases) exceeds your calculated VAT (the VAT on your sales), the difference carries over to the next period. Sellers who make reduced-rate sales (1%, 10%) while sourcing their inputs at 20% build up a permanent burden; the portion of this amount exceeding the annual refund limit (164.000 TL for 2026) can be refunded in cash or offset against other taxes. Consult your accountant for the process.

How is the VAT payable calculated?

VAT payable = calculated VAT − deductible VAT. In other words, from the VAT you collected on your sales in a period you subtract the VAT you paid on your purchases in that period. If the result is positive it is paid to the tax office; if negative (carryover VAT) it is transferred to the next period.

Is VAT deducted from the marketplace commission?

The commission invoice is issued VAT-included. Trendyol calculates the commission on the product's VAT-included sale price; no additional VAT is added on top of the deduction — on the invoice the amount is broken down as base + VAT. This VAT on the invoice is deductible VAT for you; it is subtracted from your calculated VAT on your tax return.

How is a product's VAT rate determined?

The rate is set by the type of product; the seller cannot choose it. Goods and services are classified in the lists appended to the VAT Law: basic foodstuffs 1%, the listed reduced-rate items 10%, and everything else the standard rate of 20%. Applying the wrong rate leads to both underpaid and overpaid tax.

Can VAT rates change?

Yes. The authority to set rates within the lists is exercised through Presidential Decrees; the rates and the reduced-rate refund limit are updated from time to time. This tool works with the rates in force as of 2026.
