On Amazon Türkiye, what you call the “commission” is officially named the referral fee. On every sale, Amazon takes a percentage of the item’s sale price based on its category, and adds 20% VAT on top of that percentage. This VAT addition is the most critical point that separates Amazon from Trendyol, and the place where sellers’ profit calculations go wrong most often. In this article we explain clearly how the referral fee works, the approximate ranges by category, the minimum-fee trap, and why this is completely different from the FBA fee.

Amazon commission = the referral fee

The core sales deduction Amazon takes from a seller is the referral fee. The logic is simple: because Amazon “refers” the customer to your product, it takes a percentage of the sale amount on every completed order. This percentage varies by category; it is low in high-volume, low-margin categories like electronics, and high in categories like accessories and personal care. The approximate range moves between 5% and 20%.

The referral fee is calculated on the total sale price of the item — that is, the item price plus any extra charges such as gift wrapping. Because shipping is usually included in the sale price in the Turkish market, in practice the base the rate is applied to is the item price the customer pays. You can only see the exact rate in the fee schedule and sales reports inside Amazon Seller Central; the table below points you in the right direction, but it does not replace your contract or your panel.

The critical difference: 20% VAT is added on top of the referral fee

This is where sellers coming from Trendyol make the most frequent mistake. On Trendyol, commission is applied to the VAT-inclusive sale price and the result already includes VAT — no VAT is added on top. On Amazon the logic runs the other way: the referral fee rate is applied to the VAT-excluded base, and 20% VAT is added on the resulting amount. In other words, the real deduction leaving your pocket is 20% higher than the advertised rate.

Let an example make it clear. On an item you sell for 600 TL (VAT included), let the category referral rate be 15%:

  • VAT-excluded base: 600 ÷ 1.20 = 500 TL
  • Referral fee: 500 × 15% = 75 TL
  • VAT on the referral fee: 75 × 20% = 15 TL
  • Total deducted from your payout: 90 TL (75 + 15)

If the same item had a 15% commission on Trendyol, the deduction would not be built as 600 × 15% = 90 TL with VAT added — it would be calculated directly from the VAT-inclusive amount with no VAT stacked on. On Amazon, the job is not done where you see the rate; the real cost is rate × 1.20. That is why a category that looks like 15% behaves effectively like about 18% in your profit calculation (75 + 15 = 90 TL; 15% of 600).

A common mistake: treating the referral fee as “just the rate” and forgetting the VAT. If you assume the deduction is 75 TL on a 600 TL item in a 15% category, you will be off by 15 TL per item, because the real figure is 90 TL. Across hundreds of orders, this gap can lead you to price at a loss. You can claim the VAT on the referral fee as an expense on your return — but it leaves your cash flow today.

Approximate referral fee rates by category

The table below shows approximate referral fee ranges by category. Amazon’s rates vary by sub-category, by product price band, and with updates over time; that is why we give a range rather than an exact figure. The exact rate for your category must be verified from the current fee schedule in Seller Central. The last column roughly shows, once its VAT is included, what percentage of the sale price the rate effectively corresponds to.

* Effective rate = VAT-excluded rate × 1.20 (including the 20% VAT added on top of the referral fee). This column shows the real impact of the deduction on the sale price. The values in the table are only reference ranges; because Amazon updates the exact rates by category, the only valid source is the fee schedule in force inside Seller Central. Once you have seen your exact rate, you can use the VAT calculator to split out the base and clarify the VAT added on top.

The minimum referral fee trap

In most categories Amazon applies a minimum referral fee. That is, if the product price is very low, the amount computed from the rate falls below this minimum threshold, and Amazon deducts not the rate but the fixed minimum fee. This is an item that sellers of cheap products often overlook in their profit calculation.

Let us see the logic with an example. Suppose the minimum referral fee in a category is a fixed amount and you sell an item for 20 TL. The calculation at a 15% rate comes to only a few lira; but if the minimum fee is above that, your proportional cost on a low-priced item shoots well above 15%. The result: on cheap products in the 10–30 TL band, the effective commission burden is disproportionately high compared to expensive products. That is why selling very low-priced items on Amazon is a harder profit equation than it first appears.

If you sell cheap products, check the minimum referral fee first. Even if the category’s nominal rate is low, the minimum fee kicks in at low price bands and pulls the real deduction percentage up. The exact minimum amount is listed category by category in the fee schedule in Seller Central — verify it in your panel.

Referral fee vs FBA fee: two separate calculations

These are the two most confused concepts. The referral fee is the commission you pay for making a sale, and it is paid on every sale — whether you ship the item yourself (FBM) or from Amazon’s warehouse (FBA), it makes no difference. The FBA fee (fulfillment fee), on the other hand, is a completely separate item that you pay only when you send your products to Amazon’s warehouse and fulfill orders through Amazon’s pick-pack-ship flow.

So a seller using FBA pays both the referral fee and the FBA fulfillment fee; one does not replace the other, they stack. There are also items such as a monthly storage fee, an additional storage fee for stock unsold for a long time, and a monthly subscription depending on your seller account type. We covered the entire FBA cost structure in detail in our article what Amazon FBA is and its cost; to calculate the fulfillment fee per product, you can use the Amazon FBA calculator.

Placing the referral fee correctly in your profit calculation

To find your net profit correctly on Amazon, follow four rules:

  1. Apply the rate to the VAT-excluded base: the referral fee is calculated on the base you get from sale price ÷ 1.20, not from the VAT-inclusive price.
  2. Add 20% VAT on top: the real deduction is rate × 1.20. If you skip this step, you will undercount the deduction by 20% on every order.
  3. Check the minimum fee: on a low-priced item the minimum referral fee, not the rate, may apply; the deduction percentage comes out higher than you expect.
  4. Calculate FBA separately: the referral fee is the commission; the FBA fulfillment, storage, and subscription fees are separate items and do not replace the commission.

Instead of applying these four steps by hand on every product, enter the sale price and category into the Amazon commission calculator: the referral fee, the 20% VAT added on top, and the effective rate come out automatically. If you want to line Amazon up next to other marketplaces and see which one leaves you more money on your product, the marketplace profit comparison tool shows every platform’s deduction for the same price on one screen.

Where do you see your own exact rate?

In two places. First, the current fee schedule inside Amazon Seller Central: the referral fee rates by category and any minimum fees are listed there. Second, your post-sale transaction reports: the referral fee and its VAT actually deducted on each order appear line by line. If the two sources do not match, either the category/sub-category mapping is different or the price band has triggered the minimum fee — it is worth querying the transaction report.

Knowing the rate is not enough — you have to track the deduction

Referral fee rates are updated by category, the minimum fee kicks in unexpectedly on low-priced products, and you only see the actual deduction on your transaction report. Verimle, once you connect your marketplace account, reads the real deductions of every order (commission/referral fee, VAT, shipping, service fee), automatically derives net profit per product, and alerts you when a deduction is larger than expected. When it catches a deduction that looks unfair, it detects it and prepares an objection draft — it does not bring the money back automatically, but it puts the evidence of what went wrong in front of you. Instead of memorizing the table, let the system track the deductions for you.

One final note: the referral fee (commission) rates here are guiding reference values; Amazon updates them by category, sub-category, and program, and this table does not replace Amazon's official fee schedule in force or the terms of the seller agreement specific to your account. Before setting your price, verify your own category's current rate from the Amazon Seller Central panel and Amazon's official pricing page; then recalculate net profit with the Amazon commission calculator.
