What is desi and how is it calculated?

Desi (volumetric unit) is the volumetric weight unit that carriers use to price bulky parcels. The formula is simple:

Desi = width (cm) × length (cm) × height (cm) / 3000

Example: for a box measuring 40 × 30 × 20 cm, 40 × 30 × 20 = 24,000; 24,000 / 3000 = 8 desi. The dimensions are not the product's but the outer dimensions of the packaged parcel; fractional results are rounded up to the next whole number (7.2 desi → charged as 8 desi).

Desi or kilogram: the chargeable weight

When the carrier weighs the parcel, it looks at two values: volumetric weight (desi) and actual weight (kg). The fee is set by whichever is greater — this is called the chargeable weight. For light but bulky products such as a pillow, the desi decides; for small but heavy products such as a book or metal part, the kilogram does. For example, a parcel that is 2 desi but weighs 5 kg is charged at 5 desi/kg on the tariff.

For orders of 0-199.99 TL and 200-349.99 TL at no more than 10 desi, bracket support replaces the full desi tariff with a fixed seller contribution. The advantageous model is for orders that meet the one-day lead-time, Fast Delivery or Ship Today condition; orders that do not meet those conditions use the higher standard model. All amounts below exclude VAT; multiply by 1.20 for the invoiced amount.

Example: the advantageous TEX/PTT amount for a 180 TL order is 34.16 TL + 6.83 TL VAT = 40.99 TL. At 350 TL or more, or above 10 desi at any order value, the full desi-based contracted tariff applies. 4 ways to lower your shipping cost

1. Shrink the box: Desi is calculated from the parcel size. A box that fits the product with less filler often means dropping to a lower desi tier — even going from 8 desi to 7 makes a difference on every shipment.
2. Use the bracket thresholds in your pricing: Moving a 195 TL basket to 200 TL changes the bracket; moving a 340 TL basket to 350 TL switches it to the full desi tariff. Factor those jumps in the shipping contribution into your pricing.
3. Pick the carrier by desi: The cheapest carrier is not the same at every tier: TEX/PTT at 0-2 desi, TEX/Aras around 10 desi, PTT at 30 desi. The calculator above ranks them by your tier.
4. Declare the dimensions correctly: The carrier measures the parcel itself; under-declaring leads to a later adjustment invoice, over-declaring creates needless cost. Undeliverable shipments also incur an extra charge of 25-100% of the shipping fee — don't skip address verification.
